Dean River Trip Winner - Debbee Trent
by Connie Derry NFS volunteer
We are happy to announce that Debbee Trent, avid fly fisher of Boise, Idaho is the very lucky winner of our big fish ticket drawing held in May at the annual spey clave on the Sandy River. Debbee bought one ticket at the clave thinking she just might win and would'nt it be nice if she did! She had often thought of the four wonderful times she and her late husband, Tracey, retired from 35 years with the Idaho Department of Fish and Wildlife who passed away in September of 2009 had fishing the Dean River of British Columbia. She thought how she would love to go back there sometime. Well Debbee did win the drawing and will be going to the Dean along with her stepdaughter Whitney,(also an avid fly fisher), for a week long stay in late July! They will stay at the Blackwell's Dean River Lodge and fish some incredible waters! She said she almost drove off the road when she heard she had won, she was so excited! They will take her husbands' ashes and scatter them in one of his very favorite places. Debbee, retired in counseling to trauma victims families now teaches fly fishing in the Casting For Recovery programs and relaxation /yoga. This trip is graciousy donated courtesy of the Blackwell's of Moose Lake Lodge, Anaheim Lake, B.C. As most of you already know the Dean is a world class steelhead river and this trip promises to be a great time! Debbee and Whitney we wish you luck and tight lines! Congratulations! |
Yvon Chouinard Big Supporter of NFS
By Connie Derry NFS volunteer
We are honored that Yvon Chouinard has chosen to support the Native Fish Society by naming NFS as one of the five non profit organizations to receive the proceeds from his American Express commercials shown on television during the 2010 Oscars telecast ! As many of you know Yvon is the founder and owner of Patagonia and is known worldwide for his commitment to environmental causes. He chose to support the Native Fish Society because he believes in what we do and the success of our programs. This is not the first time Yvon has given the NFS money and his support but this donation is substantial! The commercials shown to millions of viewers all over the world in partnership with American Express highlight the American Express Members Project and basically say that the future rests with those who care. Yvon tells us, "To do good you actually have to take the first step", and "To lead an examined life, if you are'nt doing this then you are part of the problem". As a member of NFS we ask that you please support those who support us and buy first class Patagonia outdoor products available at the Patagonia store in the Ecotrust building in N.W. Portland or through the Patagonia catalog. If you missed the commercials aired during the Oscars you can view them by going to Patagonia.com/cleanest line .... also Yvon's book "Let My People Go Surfing" is a wonderful read explaining how Yvon , (a reluctant businessman), started Patagonia and got involved in many environmental causes . Thank you Yvon, we will prove worthy of your support! |
NFS has a new office The Native Fish Society will move to our new Oregon City office at 221 Molalla Avenue in late June. Thanks to the generosity of NFS supporters and co-owners Garrin Royer and Daniel McGinley of Redside Development we will have a spacious new office to call home. As some Oregon City residents probably remember, the new office building is the site of the old Copeland Lumber Yard which was renovated in 2006 by Royer and McGinley. The attractive building is the 1st and as of now only,Leed- Gold Green Certified energy efficient, private building in Clackamas County. The owners incorporated the old structure into the new and utilized nearly all materials, even the old metal orange Copeland sign which was turned into fish scales on the fish sculptors in the bioswale in front of the building. The bioswale filters rainwater from the parking area before it enters the nearby creek and the Willamette River and is beautifully landscaped with native plants. We think our new location suits our mission and is a perfect fit! Other tenants in the building include the Clackamas County Soil and Conservation District and the U.S.D.A. We are excited about our move and plan an open house later this summer. We'll keep you posted! |
